For those wishing to visit the national Arboretum it is situated Approx. 7 miles 16 minutes from the George Hotel.
The committee have planned to visit the Field gun bench at the Arboretum after breakfast returning to Lichfield in time for the Commencement of the Six nations festivities.

Six Nations Game at The Squash Club
The 18th of March is the climax of the Six nations which sees
Scotland Host Italy at 12.30.
France Host Wales at 14.45
And finally Ireland host England at 17.00

It is proposed to set off for Sutton Coldfield at 1200 where we have booked a room in a Squash club to watch all three games.
Closer to the time when we have an idea of numbers we will arrange the requisite number of mini buses to get everyone to and from the venue.

During the day pies & pasties will be available from the club, and during the period between the last two game the association will be providing a curry.
The reasonably priced bar will be open all day.

Sunday BBQ
Numbers dependant, Nick Dymond has offered to show off his BBQ skills to any of the association that aren’t completely ditted out or have been locked up for fighting with any 15's (one in particular) that took offence during previous dit spinning sessions.

15th July - Queens Hotel Southsea

Just a quick heads up regarding the Members Dinner which is to be held at the Queens Hotel, Southsea on the evening of 15 July, Reunion/AGM Weekend. Details of which have been previously promulgated.

In order for us to stay ahead of the curve organisation wise, we would like you to get on and buy your ticket, so enabling us to confirm numbers etc with the venue. Tickets are £60 and purchased via the shop www.pfga.online/shop .

I can see from the list to date that some members are already forming 'Crew Year Tables' to celebrate their own mini reunions within the grand scheme. This is a great idea. For us to be able to make all of this possible we ask for early bookings and remove the risk of latecomers 'cocking' the whole thing up.

We have removed the stipulation that you have to be a member to attend the Dinner. Obviously if you are reading this email then you are an existing member, you may however know Field Gunners who for some 30 year old political reason have no desire to be a part of the association. If you do, we ask you to reach out and invite them to come along. We hope that they will see the amount of work that the committee put in on behalf of everyone and then join up. What challenged us in the past changed us forever. We all share the same bond and every year, sadly our numbers decrease.

It has been a long time since we all attended a Dinner such as this and sadly many have now crossed the bar. Don't miss this opportunity to reunite, spin some dits, remember those who have crossed and make one or two more memories.

Falklands 40 Year Remembrance

A wreath will be laid, 18 May 1130 at the Field Gun Statue in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard in remembrance of Portsmouth Field Gunners, LPT Gary Nelson - HMS ARDENT and LCK Sam Sambles - HMS GLAMORGAN. We will remember the ultimate price that they paid in service of our Queen and country in this 40th Year Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict.

There is no charge to enter this part of the dockyard. Gun numbers will be asked not to scare any kids and keep their grunts to a minimum whilst Swing and Slat numbers will have to undergo a security handbag check.

Rig: As you see fit, Blazer/Tie, Polo, Sports Rig with Sweat Bag, White Fronts/Track Boots/Gaters, Nicks and Flip Flops...

Once again it's time to get together to dit on about how strong we were, how fast we were, what outstanding individuals we were and how cr*p everyone else was over a hot toddy, mulled wine, egg nog or other poison of your choice. A chance to rip the proverbial out of your oppo, put together the ultimate 1-18 dream crew, discuss which Trainer was close to godliness and which was the epitome of the devil incarnate. Chat about which number was the easiest and which was the toughest. Obviously everyone knows that the toughest number, requiring extreme physical strength, the lightening speed of a gazelle and outstanding mental dexterity was No.10. I am sure though, when the beer starts to flow and judgment becomes impaired all manner of positions in the crew will be offered up... even No.3!

Eventually, by the end of the night, as always, YOU were in the Dream Crew and No.15 was and always will be the easiest number on the track! RADD!

Neil Jones' Celebration of Life

Memorial Day for Neil Jones

As you aware sadly last year we lost Neil Jones (dad) after a long 6 year battle with prostate cancer. In typical Neil Jones fashion and with dad being the stubborn and awkward man we loved, he decided to pass away on the first day of the COVID lockdown meaning that we haven’t been able to give him the send off that he truly deserved!
However, with restrictions starting to lift we can start to pencil a date into the diaries... 21/08/2021!
We will be holding the celebration of life at Debdale sports club with the day starting with a midlands prem Rugby league fixture of Wolfhunt vs Leamington royals. Which is fitting seeing as the last sporting event dad attended was the challenge cup game between Wolfhunt and West Bowling. Once the game has finished the 2021 challenge cup final will be shown.
We will then continue to celebrate dads life into the night with live bands and delicious food. We will be setting up a memory board on the day to remember all of the great times we were lucky enough to share with him and we would like to invite everybody to bring along any photos or memorabilia of dad. There will also be a blank book there on the day for you to write any of your favourite stories.
We will be raising funds on the day for John Eastwood hospice who provided such great care to dad and us as a family in the worst possible time!
Whilst it is extremely sad that dad is no longer with us we want to celebrate in the only way that dad knew how to and that was with good friends, having a good time.
We hope that you will be able to join us in giving dad the send off that he truly deserves!

Reaching Out

Dear Members,

Now the Government has laid out the roadmap to returning to some sense of normality out of lockdown, after the Covid 19 pandemic, myself and the committee would like to check in with you all. We held our first virtual committee meeting last night and there was a general discussion into 'do we know how everyone is doing?' On behalf of the committee and myself, we agreed we probably should have contacted you all earlier in the crisis and for that, please accept our apologies. Just like everyone else we hunkered down and tried to keep our families safe and secure.

Myself and the committee understand the essential purpose of the association today is to facilitate the need for social connections and gathering with our ‘Field Gun Family’. We obviously have not been able to fulfil that remit in 2020 and 21 to date but it is our intention to restore as much of the social programme as soon as restrictions have been lifted later this year. Full details of the future programme will be placed on the website in the next few days.

The main aim of this email is to ‘reach out’ to all of the membership. As a ‘Field Gun Family’ we do not know who has been affected financially, physical and dare I say it mentally. It is important to recognise that people will be experiencing the impact of this challenging period in different ways.

If any member wishes to be connected with others or pointed in the right direction for help, the committee would like to offer support and assistance. We are by no means experts but may be able to offer advice and guidance on who to communicate with and contact details. Hopefully this communication finds you all physically and mentally well and not experiencing too much hardship. If that is not the case however, please do not remain isolated and reach out to fellow members of the association or the committee. Committee members contact emails are available on the website.

1970 Crew 50th Anniversary & 1973 Crew Reunion

The Invitation to the 50th anniversary reunion for 1970 crew at the RNOC Old Portsmouth on Saturday 22 August has now been extended to welcome the 1973 crew principally because so many of the 1970 crew ran again in 1973. PFGA 'Northern' Reunion 2020

Weekend of 14th March...

PFGA Northern reunion 2020

The 2020 Northern Reunion will take place at the Yew Lodge Hotel, Kegworth, Leicestershire, DE74 2DF on the weekend of Fri 13th and Sat 14th March to coincide with the final round of the Six Nations Rugby.

Rugby

On Sat 14th, the intention is to transport members by coach from the hotel into Nottingham city centre to watch the rugby at Shooters Bar or Yates (RECCE to be carried out). The bus will be depart the hotel at 1200, returning at 2100. Drop off and pick up will be at the The Old Market Square.

Accommodation

The hotel management have agreed a group concession on room bookings and they are as follows:

Twin room per night - £70 including breakfast

Double room per night - £80 including breakfast

In order to take advantage of this concessionary rate, members are to book direct by phone on 01509672518 daytime working hours, 0900 – 1700 or email reservations@yewlodgehotel.co.uk quoting Portsmouth Filed Gun Northern Reunion.

Food

A reservation for 30 people has been made in the hotel restaurant, Marco Pierre Whites, New York Italian, Fri 13th 1930 for 2000. This number can be adjusted to suit group size. Members wishing to eat at this time are to confirm with the hotel staff when booking accommodation. Food on the Saturday will be available throughout the afternoon to order on an individual basis at Shooters Bar.

George West Funeral

As the dust settles on a sad day yesterday we would like to thank all PFGA members and other PFG Ex's who turned out for George West's send off in Newcastle. The family were made up with the turn out, equally with the memorial gathering at Whale Island and together with the outpouring of messages of condolences that have been posted across all platforms from around the world it just reaffirms the quality and calibre of the man and the love and respect that we all had for him.
There are four people missing from the Newcastle photo who also attended: Pat, Basher and the two Geordie twins from '87, Tony O'Donnell and Sean McKee.

AGM/Reunion

AGM/Reunion Day/Weekend Adgenda:

The weekend starts with breakfast, Fri 19 Jul 0830 at the Mardin Cafe, Copnor Rd, PO3 5EG.

There is a welcoming party for any travellers arriving on Fri 19 for reunion. We will be meet in the Ship Anson on the Hard from 1930 onwards - all welcome.

The AGM is at the GI’s, Whale Island. The PFGA Museum will be open on completion of the AGM and the curator and his assistant (Gabby & Dennis) will be giving guided tours and talks - all welcome. There will be an opportunity for a reunion picture prior to the museum visit.

A shuttle bus will be provided from the GI’s to ferry members down to the town, stopping at the Ship Castle (which still displays Field Gun memorabilia), Rubys and on to the Hard. Guests can disembark the bus at any of those venues.

Later in the day members are requested to reconvene at the Ships Anson public house on the Hard for more dits and beverages.

Finally, on completion of the watering stop at the Anson, all members are invited to attend the event at Spice Island public house, Old Portsmouth which has been booked for the evening social.

There will be a crew photo at 1930 so don’t be adrift!

As part of the reunion is ‘behind the wire’ the committee need to be informed at the very earliest opportunity if individuals plan to attend. We have to provide a list of members who are planning to enter HMS Excellent as we have to comply with the obvious security arrangements at the gate. Turning up and claiming “I am Joe Bodkin, Flying Angel” is not unfortunately going to get you access.

If you are already a member and attending your name will be on the Association list which will be on the main gate. If you are not a member (if not - why not?) and intend coming we will require names for the gate staff.

It is with great sadness that we report the Crossing of the Bar of Martin 'George' West. Pompey First Wheels, No.13. '89, '90, '95 and '98 Crews. Thank you to Tiny Nash for keeping us in the picture over the past few tragic days. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Gorge's family at this upsetting time. Funeral details will be promulgated as soon as the information is made available to us.

Tragic news from Tiny Nash:

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I have to inform you that our good friend and Ex Pompey Field Gunner LWEM Martin ‘George’ West suffered a stroke last Sunday week. Unfortunately whilst in hospital receiving treatment the blood clot burst causing catastrophic brain damage �� ..... Martin remains in hospital, he has had considerable treatment but after much sole searching and discussions with the Senior Consultant his family have decided due to the severity of the damage he will not recover. I visited him last Friday to say my goodbyes..... his wife Susan and children have been by his side throughout and will continue to do so during his final days ....... please pray for him and the family as they go through this tragic period in their lives. I will update you all as soon as I hear from the family

Command Field Gunners To Head The march Past At Brickwoods 2019

We, as Portsmouth Field Gun Association together with DFGA and FAAFGA, have been invited to lead the march past at this year's RNRMC Brickwoods Field Gun Competition, HMS Collingwood on Saturday 1 June 2019, 20 years since the demise of Command Field Gun. The Association are fortunate enough to have pre-booked a limited number of tickets before they go on General Sale and they will be available at 2 per MEMBER which will also include a pass to the Field Gun Bar in the Carling Suite. Cost £30 per ticket.

We also have spaces reserved on a coach from the Phonex pub which will include breakfast, transport, beer, buffet and entertainment on return along with match ticket. Cost for this is £75 and FULL payment should be made to John Garrett (07876 645434). A limited number of Carling Suite passes will available at £5 per pass.

Tickets will be sold via the shop on the Association website with payment through paypall on a first come first serve basis and strictly limited to 2 per member so that everyone gets a fair crack.

Once live this will be advertised via Association social media.

There is a small surcharge on the face value of the tickets to cover paypall commission, postage and a donation to the Association.

In previous years there has been an issue with Carling Suite arm bands being duplicated which has led to the possibility of a withdrawal of this facility. Command Field Gun are the only RN contingent to be granted this privilege (even at £5.50 at pint!) I would expect any Portsmouth Association members to respect this.

Due to ongoing improvements at Twickenham the West car park no longer accepts coaches.

Remembrance Day in Britain

November is the time of the year when we wear a red poppy in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us during wars.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.

What is Remembrance Day?

Remembrance Day is on 11 November . It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after th e Second World War.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11 November. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain.

The Last Post'

The Last Post is traditionally played to introduce the minute's silence in commemoration ceremonies. It is usually ' played on a bugle. In military life, 'The Last Post' marks the end of the day and the final farewell.

Poppy Day

Anzac Day in Australia

Anzac Day is a public holiday in Australia. It is their day for remembering all those people who fought and died in many wars for freedom of all people and to stop injustice.

Linda from Brisbane emailed to tell us about the day:

"We have parades here, just like you will see parades in November for Remembrance Day, but here the children and grandchildren and even great grandchildren will march alongside the veterans, wearing the medals of the grand/parents. The parades are usually held very early in the morning, just as the day dawns. Special Anzac services will be held in schools the day before."

Subsea to Summit...

Hi guys, just a quick reminder that I am helping take part in a great charity event this weekend and any support would be really appreciated. More details below;

A never before... and probably never again walk up Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain in Historical Diving Equipment weighing over 80 kg (176lbs). The 'walk' starts on the 1st September 2018 and will be done in a relay between several different people; taking an expected 4 to 5 days to complete. It will begin at minus 5 metres in Loch Linnhe and finish at 1345 metres, the summit of Ben Nevis. A total climb of 1350m or 4,430ft.

The idea came from Ginge Fullen, a former Leading Diver in the Royal Navy’s elite Clearance Diving Branch, who has combined a career in diving with his passion; climbing the highest mountains in more than 170 countries around the world. Ginge wanted to do an expedition so brutal that it will probably never be repeated again so, after meeting up with Ty Burton, from the Historical Diving Society (HDS), these two like-minded people came together to make this challenge happen.

The HDS has come on board supporting the project with both manpower and equipment. All funds raised will be distributed evenly between; The Historical Diving Society, The local Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team (LMRT) and the family of Saman Kunan, the former Thai Navy Diver who tragically died, while taking part in efforts to rescue 12 boys and their football coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. He lost consciousness on his way out of the Tham Luang cave complex, where he had been delivering emergency air cylinders.

The HDS was formed in 1990 by a group of enthusiasts whose aim is to preserve and protect our diving heritage and to advance the education and interest of the public and other parties in their study of Diving History.

The LMRT depend on the public’s continuing donations and fundraising support as the costs involved in running a mountain rescue team are extremely high. For example, a 800m rope, which might only be safe to use once, costs around £1000.

E-T and Stavros visited and sat in the dining room and garden. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. They tried to engage John with names and memories also about his family which spurred him into remembering various things (or so it seemed). A 30 minute visit would be appreciated as he doesn't see anyone really other than family. Lets show John some support (he more than deserves it!) and nip in, spin a few 'out, back and home' dits... RADD...

We have been informed of the crossing of the bar and scattering of ashes of John Lloyd. This is from his nephew David Lloyd:

I have to unfortunately inform you that John Lloyd passed away earlier this year. We celebrated his life by scattering his ashes at sea as per his last wish. He was a very proud man who spoke very highly of his time with the gun crew. At his ‘wake’ I recited the gun crew motto…I eventually found him on the old photos, he was part of the 1961 crew.

John Johnson Lloyd (a Jock from Aberdeen), apparently he was known in the Navy as “ Canvas back Jack”….he used to box and spent a considerable amount of time on his back…

We have received this sad message from Pete Chisholm:

Sadly our shipmate Pete Foxon slipped anchor and crossed the bar this morning at 7.20 at Bassetlaw Hospice. Pete will be missed by all his family especially his grandson who Pete sponsored on his motorbike activity.

Pete Foxon’s funeral details are as follows:
the funeral will take place on Tuesday 24th July at 11am at Rosehill crematorium, Doncaster DN4 6HE
Followed by drinks at The West Retford Hotel, Retford.

With heavy hearts we inform you that one of our brethren has crossed the bar. Alan (Joe) Binstead passed away unexpectedly. Joe ran in 1967 and was PTI a few years later. His son Scot has asked that we post this and let everyone know his funeral will be held on Thursday 19th July at Portchester crematorium, 1345 and then to the Jolly Farmer in Warsash.

Is there a connection with the Chant "Ring a Ding Ding" and "The Pompey Chimes"?

The origins of the "Pompey Chimes" chant lies with Royal Artillery (Portsmouth) FC, circa 1890 who played many of their home games at the United Services Recreation Ground in Burnaby Road, Portsmouth, within easy earshot of the Portsmouth Guildhall clock bells, which inspired the chant.

The Royal Artillery held the nickname "The Gunners" because of their British Army origins and also "Pompey", adopted from the city of Portsmouth in which they were based, ergo Pompey Gunners. The Pompey Chimes date back as far as the 1890s. Referees are said to have used the chime of the nearby Guildhall clock to let them know when the match should finish at 1600. Just before 1600 the crowd would sing along with the chimes to encourage the referee to blow the full-time whistle.

The only time the bells stopped was during the war, until they were turned off by the city council in 2003 for urgent repair work.

The Victoria Bell is the biggest, weighing in at 3.9 tons.

The Royal Artillery were expelled from the FA Amateur Cup in 1898, for professionalism. Because of the scandal of their expulsion and ending the League season poorly, Royal Artillery then decided to disband.

From out of the ashes of Royal Artillery (Portsmouth) F.C., a new club was soon founded. Many of Royal Artillery's supporters then transferred their allegiance to the new club and brought the 'Pompey Chimes' chant with them from Burnaby Road to the newly created Fratton Park.

The original words to 'The Chimes', as printed in the 1900-01 Official Handbook of Portsmouth FC, were:

Now supporters chant:

Summer Reunion 2018

The Summer reunion is on Saturday 7th July and will be held in the New Vic bar in Weymouth, which is on the seafront towards the harbour end of the beach. The New Vic has a large function room for the AGM which will commence at 1200. Tea and coffee will be served before the meeting and the plan is (obviously) to adjourn to the bar afterwards. As mentioned in the Spring newsletter, partners are very welcome.

I already know there will be a lot of us arriving on the Friday and those that I have spoken to have already booked accommodation for the weekend. If you are planning to stay in Weymouth for the weekend (or overnight) you really should be booking your rooms/campsites etc now. Remember Weymouth is a holiday resort and although the schools won’t have broken up yet, there will still be a lot of visitors in town at this time.

For those not intending to stay for the weekend, there will also be a bus running from Pompey. The bus pick up and drop off details are;

White Horse pub, Southsea – leave at 0845
Green Posts pub, North End – leave at 0915
The bus will leave Weymouth sea front at 2359 from a location to be decided by the driver (before everyone gets off at Weymouth) on the day, and will drop off at the Green Posts followed by the White Horse.

The Association will subsidise the bus, so the cost for the return trip will be £10 (even ET and Stavros would find this reasonable).

We will book a bus to accommodate the numbers travelling (ie; if only 12 travelling then we’ll book a mini bus). Therefore, the £10 must be paid in advance to book a seat. Please visit the PFGA shop for booking payments. www.pfga.online/shop

As usual the meeting will be concluded with a Tot Time and after the meeting we will adjourn to the bar.

There will be a curry/pasta meal served at about 1900 and there is a disco in the New Vic in the evening. Don Philpot (FAA No 1) will be rounding up the Portland/Weymouth based Wafus and we are expecting them to join us in the evening. Unlike the coach load of nurses, it is quite likely they will turn up.

The dust has now settled following a fantastic Army Navy weekend and I'm sure that a few of us are still nursing a 'thick head' (me included). Some made it to Twickenham/London for one day, some two and some three days.
It is always great to reunite with old crew buddies, shipmates and friends that we formed unbreakable bonds with over the years. The sun was blazing and the beer was flowing. Unfortunately the Carling Bar didn't re-open following the game due to the power cut so we lost the usual Tri-Command Field Gun social on completion. That resulted in a bit of a 'bomb burst' around the other Twickers bars and I know that a few of you didn't manage to see people that you would have otherwise met up with. We (the PFGA) apologise for that but it was totally and utterly out of our hands. I'm pretty sure that the incident didn't detract too much from the occasion and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Army Navy 2019 is on the 4th of May so start making your arrangements now... Don't dip out, it's priceless! RADD!...

Those staying at Premier Inn County Hall, Belverde Road, Lambeth, London SE1 7PB tickets will be distributed in the bar on Friday night/Sat morning. Anyone staying in London that would like to join us are more than welcome.

Those on the coach from the Phonex, 51-55 Torrington Road, Portsmouth PO2 0TN Match tickets will be ready for you on arrival and Jacko will issue the Field Gun bar passes.
Breakfast will be served from 0715 and coaches will leave at 0845 sharp, check blackboards in bar to see what coach you are on.

Please note that as requested by the Secretary of the RNRU Carling Suite Field Gun Bar Passes will be issued on the day (please see below). Whilst I am confident that none of our members would jeopardise our use we will follow instructions and a member of your committee will man the door and issue passes – if you have not pre-booked and you are not on the list you will NOT get in.

Whilst this is a pain in the arse ‘The Field Gun Associations’ are the only RN Contingent to get an RFU bar we don’t want to lose it!

I know in the past Alan Church, the Secretary of the RNRU has emailed you to ask that these wrist bands are not copied as there have been incidents in previous years (2016 and 2017) where the RFU bar entry staff have reported copies have been used. The RNRU have been warned by the RFU that if this continues we will lose this facility. Therefore please can I ask that you do not hand out the bands until the day of the game. We are aware that the capacity of this facility is less than you would wish, however it is the only bar allocated to the Royal Navy and it is not possible to allocated a larger function room.

As we are all aware, in recent years you have been let down by a number of your membership and there is no doubt that if there is a repeat this year you will lose the facility. This is not a threat, it merely reflect the RFU stance.

Twickers Tickets Update: Tickets will be sent out two weeks before the game (we haven’t received our allocation yet). Those who are staying at the ‘London County Hall’ on the Friday will be given theirs by hand. Wrist bands to allow entry to the Carling Suite (Field Gun Bar) will be handed out on the lounge door at Twickenham prior to the game. Early collection is recommended/advised/encouraged. Once they have been distributed the committee can stand down and get on it! Sorry, the committee can relax and enjoy the game!... RADD!

Danny Manners Funeral. (please share)

Danny 's Funeral will take place on 27 Oct 17. There will be a service held at St Barbra's Church on Whale Island, 1100, followed by a Cremation at 1300, The Oaks Crematorium at in Havant.

Rig Blazer & Tie (or equivalent).

Serving members of the armed forces, uniform is optional (Number 1 Bravos).

The GI's bar will be open at 1000, prior to the service for tea and coffee and re-open on completion until 1600. A finger buffet will be provided from 1400. The celebration of the big mans life will continue through the evening for Laughter & Tears, Curry and Dits at the White Horse in Southsea. Food will be laid on from 1800.

A nominal list of names will be supplied to the security staff on the main gate.

HMS Queen Elizabeth Enters Portsmouth Harbour...

Thousands of people lined the seafront to watch the Royal Navy's Flagship and most powerful warship ever built by Britain arrive at her home port, Portsmouth today for the first time.

The £3billion HMS Queen Elizabeth - dwarfing its accompanying flotilla - sailed into Portsmouth, the Royal Navy's premier dockyard, after setting off from Fife for sea trials two months ago.

Members of the 700-strong crew, plus 200 contractors, mustered on the deck to wave to their friends and family as the aircraft carrier arrived shortly after 7.30am.

As the crowds welcomed her in, it is reported that Commander Darren Houston could be heard saying over the tannoy to those on the shore: 'Good morning Portsmouth, Ring a Ding Ding!'

Derek Cousins has Crossed the Bar...

It is with a heavy heart that we have to report the Crossing of the Bar of Derek Cousins today, 16 April 2017.

Derek, a former PTI and Portsmouth Field Gun trainer with a hugh Pompey blue heart will be sorely missed.

Derek had fought cancer successfully three times and as such was on a 'Memorial Cycle Ride for Charity' to raise money for 'Stand Up To Cancer'. It was during this when he suffered a massive heart attack.

As soon as we know more information we will promulgate further details.

Our heart felt sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Derek's wife Enid and to their family for their loss at this sad time.

RIP Derek.

Where we are...

After almost 6 months work we now have 1 new Website, 1 new Facebook page, 1 new Twitter account, 1 new Youtube channel, 1 new LinkedIn account, 2364 images catalogued and uploaded, 39 videos edited catalogued and uploaded, new members signing up and reconnecting with old oppos. I have not done this for some kind of self gratification, I have done it to honour all those who at one time manned the loops, assisted as support staff or supported Portsmouth Field Gun Crew. I believe that together, and through the continuing efforts of the PFGA we can keep the memory of the truly amazing spectacle that Command Field Gun was alive. More importantly we remain connected; "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers..."
If you are reaping the rewards of the hard work put into what you see by 'liking', 'sharing', 'commenting' and generally 'ditting on' and are not a member you should ask yourself why not? If in your heart you truly come up with a strong reason why not, well we all respect that... But why then are you browsing?

Happy Ladysmith Day!

1st March 1900

HAPPY LADYSMITH DAY!
As the British Army was besieged by Boer fighters in the garrison town of Ladysmith, Natal, the Royal Navy landed guns from HM Ships Terrible and Powerful to help in the relief of the siege. Special carriages and mountings for these guns had been improvised by Percy Scott, before the Naval Brigade manhandled six field guns each weighing nearly half a metric tonne over rough terrain to assist their opposite numbers of the British Army.
The gallant defenders were helped enormously by the arrival at the last minute, of Captain the Hon Hedworth Lambton of the Naval Brigade with his 280 Blue-Jackets, four 12 pounders and two 4.7 inch guns. After the siege of Ladysmith was finally lifted, Her Majesty Queen Victoria I sent a telegram: ‘Pray express to the Naval Brigade my deep appreciation of the valuable services they have rendered with their guns'’...

And so was born the best competition in the world - EVER!

The crew galleries are slowly but surely coming together. It is an extremely time intensive process but it will be worth it in the end. We have been informed of the sad news that Pete Scott, Crew: 1968, '71 '74 & Trainer: 1978 '79 '82 '83 has lost his battle with cancer and passed away. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go to Dorothy and his family.

From an article in the Telegraph about HMS Illustrious' (My last ship I served in) final voyage from Pompey. Just seemed to sum up what being a member of her majesty's Royal Navy was all about...
Ships sail ready for almost every contingency, as do the sailors in them. Those matelots also embark on these deployments together. No one is a spectator – no one stays back on an airfield, or commands from a bunker miles away from the action.
The naval ethos is: “All of one company.” Every sailor accepts the same level of danger, the same highs and lows, and the same separation for months at a time. The bond between the people on board is based on trust: that your “oppo” will protect you when needed, fight alongside you when called upon and share in your troubles and woes.
When you are thousands of miles from a friendly port, there is no fire brigade to fight a fire, no repairman to fix the engine, and no one else to protect you from enemies. Everyone in the ship runs out of milk and fresh food (or loo roll) at the same time.

Heavy Field Gun carriages

They went ashore at Durban

And caught a train inland,

Seen off by all the populace

At Ladysmith they found the town

All of us feeling a little bit shit.

No more first wheels, no trail on the wall.

We live in a world where field gun is gone.

Only remembered in poems and songs.

So remember those guys who once manned the loops.

Think of them too when you think of our troops.

Silver medals they have in their pockets I bet,

The bronze discarded but still covered in sweat.

More sad news I'm afraid. The Membership Secretary has just received this message:

Hope you don't mind me contacting you, just finished my workout at my local gym.
Been stopped by a gentleman who informs me an ex Portsmouth Field Gunner as passed. His name is Dobbs Webb ran 3 times however 55 was the winning crew. I think he was a member of the association.

Are You A Member ?

A note from our Membership Sec...
Hi Guys,
Hope you are all well, just a quick line following on from the unfortunate loss of our long time secretary Peter Ruddock. I have taken over the role of membership secretary, my main aim is to facilitate all those who wish to remain within the association. To that end I have trawled through Peters records and the bank account to try and ascertain all those who have set standing orders up in the new PFGA bank account.
I know that all of you guys would wish to remain part of the PFGA which we are all committed to improve and push forward as a vehicle for ex-field gunners to keep in touch.
As it stands at the moment there is list of members on the 'Join' page. If your name does not appear on it then there was probably a mix up when the bank accounts changed over. Also, there are 182 previous members who used to pay by cheque or cash. As yet we have no way of getting in touch with these guys, I will put another list out in a few days to see if we can collectively track them down. Then of course we have ex-field gunners who have never joined...

All PFGA members their familys and friends are invited to the Remembrance Service on Sunday13th November at St Barbara.s Church, Whale Island.

A PFGA wreath will be laid during the ceremony to remember all our dear and departed friends.
GIs Association will be open on from 1015, tea and coffee and bar on completion of service. Guests to be seated by 1040
